The new Bosch X-Lock grinder and wheel system is about to end the frustrating search for your wrench. It looks like a wheel attachment system that will change the grinder game like Starlock did for multi-tools. I got a new 10 amp paddle switch grinder and some accessories to try.

What makes this interface difficult is that you have to fix a wheel that rotates at 10,000 RPM or higher and is subjected to a lot of force. So far, the classic flange nut has not deviated too much, so the idea of a tool-free option is very attractive.

From the grinding machine, the X-Lock mechanism slides within the grinding wheel, similar to any ordinary grinding wheel and grinding wheel combination. The difference is that there is a unique shape that must be lined up to lock.

To set the wheel, rotate it until its pattern matches the flange, and then push it down until it clicks. This extends the two parts and fixes the wheel to the main shaft.

When your wheel is properly connected, it will make a clicking sound. When the wheel needs to be replaced, the front lever will release the lock and eject the wheel instead of using a wheel lock and adjustable wrench.

By creating a system that prevents free rotation on the spindle and tightly fixes the grinding wheel to the spindle, it does not require the surface area and tension of traditional grinding machine flanges.

I have no doubts about the performance of this 4-1/2 inch, 10 amp grinder. What I really want to know is whether the experience of cutting and grinding under load is the same.

The cutting and grinding discs I use will not slip at all even under heavy loads. I also didn't feel any abnormal bending. However, this is not surprising. If you look closely at the interface, it is installed in a way to ensure that the wheels will not slip, unless you happen to install it incorrectly, and I haven't found a solution yet.

The only installation failure I've seen for users is that they didn't make the attachment click into place. Even so, it will fall off immediately before you start the grinder.

In terms of accessories, Bosch told us that most of them will be backward compatible with standard 7/8-inch mounting grinders. This is great news for any store that wants to stock a brand of wheels and has both X-Lock and standard grinders.

The place you encounter incompatibility is something like a cup brush. It has no threads and will not let your wrench go deep enough into the installation position.

You simply cannot use standard accessories on the X-Lock grinder.

Currently, you have three basic types of Bosch X-Lock grinders: 10 amp, 13 amp, and 18 volt cordless grinders. There are several options for each wired model.

There are currently about 50 Bosch X-Lock accessories, and I am not going to list all of them. However, this is a list of types you can find. Feel free to scroll through all the options here.

Bosch's X-Lock system is very convenient and easy to use. It locks the parts of the grinder and will not have any negative impact on your grinding feeling. These accessories are a bit more expensive than Bosch's non-X-Lock accessories, so take this into consideration.

If you spend a lot of time replacing the grinding wheel, hate to forget where you put the wrench last time, or just like the idea of a more convenient interface, please buy it. If you are satisfied with the current system and do not want the cost of consumables to increase, please pass.

Everyone says that you don’t use a monkey wrench to change wheels. Yes, I think it’s obvious to anyone who has used a grinder. You rarely need a wrench. Having said that, I just bought a cordless x lock. I like it for many reasons. For example, even if you don't use a wrench, tightening and loosening the nut and tracking the nut is still much slower than the x-lock system. Secondly, in order to use the tool completely safely, it is actually necessary to use a wrench. Yes, I put it on...Read more »

Good invention, hope it will become the standard of Bosch SDS chuck system. Even if you can often replace the disk without an adjustable wrench, the quick lock will be faster and more convenient. Perhaps the better thing is that the disk and the tool will be flush, and may not be as flush as a diamond disk screwed directly on a threaded shaft. So what will happen to that disk?

Although I think Bosch has done something innovative, it seems to be a solution to the problem. First of all, as most people say, most people rarely use wrenches in real life. Including myself. Second, there is a simple solution. Tie the wrench to the wire near the plug. If you need a wrench, you must unplug the power cord. Installing the wrench in the side handle is another simple solution. May not be suitable for everyone, but also suitable for all tools (such as battery tools), except X-lock? Haha, I didn’t understand Bosch...maybe just to concentrate...Read more »

The cost of these will be BERY interesting... or just simple SCARY!

Can't remember when I used a wrench to change the wheels of the grinder last time. For the past 14 years, I have used the grinder almost every day
