L&T's Metallurgy and Material Handling (MMH) strategic business group is the country's largest EPC participant, providing turnkey factory solutions for customers in the mining and metals industry. In the past few decades, it has delivered several complex greenfield and brownfield projects. For many years, the pillars of MMH's success have been its advanced computer-aided design, engineering, technology and process knowledge of complex systems, and project execution capabilities. MMH's core competitiveness has been further enhanced and enriched through its product business and manufacturing capabilities.

The manufacturing business of L&T MMH has been at the forefront of introducing the latest products and technologies to valued customers in cement, mining, construction, steel, ports and other core industries. It designs, manufactures and services a variety of products, such as crushing solutions, surface mining machines, sand plants, material handling equipment (stackers and reclaimers, truck dumpers), high-speed railway equipment (full-span transport vehicles, transport beams, launchers) Beam), torpedo ladle carts, steel mill equipment and various other customized products tailored to the requirements. If it is located in state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Kansbahal, Odisha and Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, these products are produced in two factories.

The manufacturing business has existed since the 1960s. It was established mainly to support our country's ambition to support and develop the steel industry through the localization of key equipment manufacturing. The intention to serve the ambitions of Indian industry has remained the same for decades. Over the years, the product portfolio has evolved in response to the changing needs and economic conditions of the country.

Over the years, the product portfolio includes complex steel plant equipment, paper mills, complete crushing solutions for various mineral applications (ranging from 50 tons to 2000 tons per hour), large-scale material handling equipment, such as stackers and reclaimers ( Up to 10,000 tons per hour) and truck dumpers/tandem dumpers to name a few.

As our country and industry shift their preferences to a safer and more environmentally friendly product portfolio, MMH is the first to introduce an open-pit mining machine designed and manufactured locally in India for coal and limestone mining applications. The open-pit mining machine completely abandons the dangerous blasting of the mine, making the entire mining process safer, more efficient and economical.

In order to promote eco-friendly buildings based on GoI's initiative, MMH's product business has proposed a localized revolutionary project e7-Sand Factory. Today, many of our sand-making plants are also helping our country’s economic and ecological development without affecting the quality of sand, which is the most consumed building material.

When our distinguished Prime Minister called on Indian industrial leaders to strengthen local manufacturing through the "Made in India" program and Atma Nirbhar Bharat, Product BU made its own contribution to the country's proud project (Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Project). During the challenging pandemic period, it designed and manufactured the country's first and largest full-span start-up high-speed rail equipment. The Honourable Minister of Railways (Sri Ashwini Vaishnaw) personally attended the ceremony on September 9 this year for the first batch of equipment. The National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL) showcased the high-speed rail equipment built by L&T on the "Engineer's Day" and dedicated its position to the country's engineers.

The digital journey of product BU takes root in its manufacturing process and supply equipment operated by remote IoT. In support of digital and smart solutions initiatives, our design and service engineers at the Kansbahal plant in Odisha can now monitor all operating parameters of the sand plant operating at remote customer quarries anywhere in the country. Field device performance generated through the remote Internet of Things is captured in the database and analyzed through the Power BI dashboard to help better serve customers while enhancing product design and manufacturing.

Commenting on the transformation, Mr. DKSen, a full-time director and Senior Executive Vice President (Development Projects), said: "L&T's MMH business is leading the Indian manufacturing and digitalization program by helping customers gain efficiency, productivity and safety benefits. We are We have been committed to digital transformation at two production facilities and project sites. Therefore, our dependence on men, material supplies or any unforeseen interruptions, such as pandemics, has been greatly reduced..."

Material management at the Kansbahal plant includes QR code-based tracking from raw materials to finished product assembly, while the Kanchipuram digital store's consumable management is very popular. Welding consumables processing procedures have been digitized to better use consumables and reduce manual data recording through the QR code system.

At Kancheepuram, the customer's entire quality control process has been digitized through the Conquer application for the process of generating inspection calls, inspection reports, store observations, and non-compliance reports. Virtual reality-based applications help lighting help to remotely check the work of customers and managers.

Both Kansbahal and Kanchipuram factories are equipped with high-precision CNC machines, while state-of-the-art manufacturing and assembly facilities ensure timely delivery. The production time of machines and labor is captured by monitoring equipment based on QR codes. Weighing bridges, EOT cranes, DGs, welding power sources and arc control systems all support the Internet of Things, and their utilization and productivity are tracked through the Asset Insight app.

As the Indian economy is expected to see substantial growth in the next few years, especially in steel, mining, cement, infrastructure and other core industries, MMH’s manufacturing department is ready to fulfill its promise to continue to provide safer, higher quality, and superior technology , Smarter products. And more environmentally friendly products.
